As well as providing calories for energy, milk is rich in calcium for growth and bone density and a wide range of nutrients for child development.
During childhood there is a once in a lifetime opportunity to build strong bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis later in life. Bone growth is virtually complete by the age of 25.
Osteoporosis costs the NHS in excess of Ł940 million to treat each year.
Dentists recommend that water and milk are the only safe drinks for teeth between meals – 43% of children show signs of tooth decay before they are 5 years old.
